Superstar drummer forms band with Plymouth school pupils.

A school performed a Christmas single in style – with Bastille superstar Chris ‘Woody’ Wood on the drums. The chart-topping pop star, who cut his teeth while growing up in Plymouth, visited his old school to recreate festive hit Do They Know It’s Christmas? Woody returned to Devonport High School for Boys to show its current crop of youngsters how it’s done. But with pupils acting as his backing band and teachers joining in on vocals they proved they could put on a show themselves.

Bastille have had a remarkable year, rocketing to fame with their number one debut album, Bad Blood. They also scooped the 2014 Brit Award for British Breakthrough Band this year, and toured the United States. Woody, who learnt how to play the drums while studying at the grammar school and went on to play in Plymouth-based bands, said he was delighted to return to the school.

Headteacher Kieran Earley added: “I’m pretty confident that this will have been Woody’s toughest gig to date. “Marshalling an enthusiastic group of teachers in front of a thousand students in a Christmas frenzy can’t have been easy. “Hi-hats off!”
