Johnny Elichaoff, former drummer with King Crimson’s Robert Fripp, dies

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

Drummer Johnny Elichaoff, known as Johnny Toobad during a stint with King Crimson‘s Robert Fripp, has died in an apparent suicide. He was 55. Elichaoff fell from the top of a shopping center in Bayswater, west of London, the same ledge he’d been talked down from two weeks ago, according to the Telegraph. Elichaoff had apparently closed a number of business interests in the period leading up to his death, the Sun says in a separate report.

Elichaoff worked with Fripp in a turn-of-the-’80s group called the League of Gentlemen, along with XTC‘s Barry Andrews and Sara Lee, later a touring musician with the B-52′s. The band played some 77 gigs in 1980 and released one studio album in 1981, though by then Elichaoff had been replaced. He was part of Stark Naked and the Car Thieves, and opened for Siouxsie Sioux and U2, before becoming a band manager where he oversaw the career of Tears for Fears.

Elichaoff battled an addiction to pain killers in the wake of a serious motorcycle accident in 2006, and divorced his wife Trinny Woodall — host of Britain’s ‘What Not to Wear’ — in 2009, after 10 years of marriage. A small card was found at the scene of Elichaoff’s death, according to the Daily Mail, which read: “Miss you always, T.”

So saddened & shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Johnny Elichaoff whom I met on Channel 4 “Four Rooms” as we flirted on screen and he kindly bought my African artifacts. I find it very hard to believe that he took his own life and am in shock! My deepest sympathies and condolences goes out to his family, son and Trinny Woodall. R.I.P Johnny xx
