Drummer Mike Byrne Leaves Smashing Pumpkins
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has confirmed that drummer Mike Byrne is no longer with band.
Asked by MusicRadar if Byrne would be drumming alongside newly-recruited percussionist Tommy Lee on the band’s forthcoming Monuments to an Elegy (slated to arrive sometime next year), Corgan responded, “Mike, like Elvis, has left the building.”
The reason for Byrne’s departure remains uncertain; when pressed for more details on the circumstances of the split, Corgan repeated, “Let’s just say that Mike, like Elvis, has left the building.”
Byrne joined Corgan and company back in 2010, replacing founding member Jimmy Chamberlin (and at the tender age of 19, no less). He sat in for 2009′s Teargarden by Kaleidyscope and 2012′s Oceania, and accompanied the band on tour.
Lee, meanwhile, will reportedly be featured on all nine tracks on Monuments to an Elegy. No word on whether or not Bryne’s absence will affect the Mötley Crüe drummer’s involvement with the Pumpkins.
