Drummer for Midnight Oil Hints at Reunion

Friday, June 6th, 2014

Midnight Oil drummer Rob Hirst says members of the iconic Australian rock band are keen to reunite for a tour, but front man Peter Garrett was busy writing a memoir.

“Peter’s writing his memoirs at the moment, so that might take a while, but I think everyone’s up for it,” Hirst told Faster Louder online music magazine in an interview published on Tuesday.

The lanky, bald-headed singer, now aged 61, quit the band in 2002 to pursue a career in federal politics. He became a Cabinet minister in the previous Labor Party government before quitting Parliament at elections in September last year.

Midnight Oil was a loud, anti-establishment band that released a series of successful albums during a 26-year career. Its biggest international hit single was “Beds are Burning” from the band’s 1987 album “Diesel and Dust.”

The band has reformed twice for charity concerts: WaveAid in 2005 and Sound Relief in 2009.
