Meinl Introduces New 16” Byzance Extra Dry Medium Thin Hihat

Meinl is proud to add a new 16” Medium Thin Hihat to its Byzance Extra Dry Series of cymbals, all of which are hand hammered from B20 bronze in Meinl’s own Turkish cymbal factory. Living up to their name, Extra Dry series cymbals are extremely dry, with low-pitched, trashy and short sounds due to their unlathed surface and extensive hand hammering.

“We’ve received a lot of feedback from our customers and artists requesting that we add this particular model to our assortment,” says Meinl Cymbal Product Manager Stefan Mueller. “Big-sized hihats have become very popular over the last few years. They offer a full bodied sound with a lot of low end and volume, yet stay controllable and focused.”

The new Meinl 16” Byzance Extra Dry Medium Thin Hihats are recommended for Rock, Funk, R&B, Jazz and similar styles. They are also great for studio work.

Meinl Introduces New 14” Byzance Derek Roddy Signature Serpents Hihat

Meinl is proud to add the new 14” Derek Roddy Signature Hihat to its Byzance Brilliant Series of cymbals. Hand hammered from B20 bronze in Meinl’s own Turkish cymbal factory, it combines an Extra Dry cymbal and a Brilliant finished cymbal in one hihat. Depending on the player’s sonic preference, each cymbal can be used either on the bottom or on the top. This makes the 14” Serpents Hihat a very versatile instrument that fits every musical situation.

“The Serpents hats are the perfect hihat for me,” says Derek Roddy. “They have an oversized sound without being…well, oversized. A super fuzzy sound when played open and an articulate and crisp sound when played closed. Need another sound for another type of gig? Then turn them over and experience a totally different sounding set of hats that is much softer and less dramatic. They fit in every musical situation. Truly the most versatile hihat I have ever played.”

A special video produced by Derek Roddy in which he demonstrates his new Serpents Hihat is available on or on Meinl’s YouTube channel.

Meinl Introduces A New 10” Byzance Vintage Splash

Meinl is proud to add a new 10” Splash to its Byzance Vintage Series. This series features a sandblasted surface which gives the cymbals a soft feel and distinctive matte finish. Sandblasting also enhances the dryness of a cymbal and shortens its sustain, which are the naturally preferred characteristics of a splash cymbal. This new Meinl splash cymbal offers a trashy splash sound, has an ultra fast response and quick decay. It fits into any music that isn’t in the upper decibel levels. A great asset for any percussion set up too.
